Dorian Society, California State University [Published date: 1991]. Catalog for exhibition held March 9 - April 10, 1991 at the Todd Madigan Gallery, California State University, Bakersfield. Paper covers, 69 pp. [From About the Exhibition] Scenes of California Life, 1930-1950 represents a year-long search by The Dorian Society to locate and present an exhibition of Regionalist and Social Realist paintings that illustrate California life: family picnics in the park, the familiar Standard Oil station, "The Good War" rural California, cities at an earlier stage of development, the Red Cars, the Cable Cars, Yosemite before the crowds came, laundry drying on the line, the circus, the Depression, and Pacific Ocean Park. All are themes evocative of California during the 1930s and 1940s.The selection of the paintings was not the work of a single curator, but rather the endeavor of Dorian Society members who, at the outset, sought to find a theme to govern the selection process. After considering and discussing the subject of over 250 paintings, the group finally realized that the show must have many themes. The members then set out to find representations among these paintings of how people, events, pastimes, occupations, industries, transportation, architecture, the countryside, and the changing face of cities, are remembered. The seventy-four selections in the exhibition were the result of the group's desire to choose quality paintings never before exhibited. The cover paintings, On Leave and Going Home, were chosen to remind us that wars do end and that servicemen and women do return, as they did at the end of World War II.The catalog reflects the caliber of the exhibit. Each of the artists represented by a biographical sketch and at least one painting. In total, 54 paintings are reproduced in full color. Moure's essay defines the technique and elements of the California Scene and gives historical significance to the paintings as part of the American Scene. movement.
