Born in upstate New York in 1952, a typical child of the time, raised in a modest home, family of eight, twin sister, and a high school dropout, Shelby would enlist in the armed forces at seventeen. Serving honorably, she distinguished herself off the coast of Portsmouth, England, during a nighttime rainsquall in heavy seas safely delivering the governor ashore. Commendations were again bestowed on her in Cuba for her role in preventing a Navy destroyer from running aground in a high wind and torrential downpour. The White House recruited her for her seamanship, and she would serve as conning officer and crewman aboard the presidential yacht USS Sequoia. Questioning her gender identity, she often struggled to ignore inner feelings while living life on the edge as an explosives reconnaissance diver, then a pilot. Now a college-educated CSE, unable to escape the emotional stress of being transgendered, she sought answers that did not come easy.
