In the late 1870's the Lincoln County War burst out with ferocity upon the southeastern portion of the Territory of New Mexico.Triggered by a struggle for political and economic control of a recently opened sparsely populated vast area almost the size of Ireland, and fuelled by a mix of greed, politics, and religious tensions, it was fought out to the bloody end by men from many of the States, Canada, Ireland, and Britain, a representative cross section of the hardy population of frontier America. The conflict and it s sequels figured several men who entered into the romantic legends of a fabulous era, including Billy the Kid, John Chisum, Pat Garrett, and others. This short narrative history traces the causes of the conflagration, and follows the rapidly evolving events to the final decisive confrontation and beyond, up to the dramatic death of Billy the Kid.
