Singular, a journalist, traces how violent rage from the murder of talk-show host Alan Berg to shootings at Columbine and other schools has moved from society's edges and into the mainstream. While such incidents of violence may appear unconnected, beneath the surface a collective social process links them, he argues they are extreme symptoms of a pervasive problem. Singular has a good point about a dangerous dynamic of anger now shaping attitudes in the US, but his text is occasionally overwrought; and it is not well served by the book's difficult typeface and aggressive design elements. There is no index. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
