Dr. Smollett, that in almost all his novels, besides introducing lively sketches of many living characters, he contrived to interweave a considerable portion of his own history. It becomes therefore necessary, in considering the merit and composition of his novels, to advert to a circumstance which may sometimes serve to illustrate them. Humphry Clinker, which, in the opinion of many of his friends and readers, has been accounted the roost entertaining and agreeable of all his works, appears to have been written about the year 1767, when he was lingering under a very severe illness, and when his mind was afflicted by the loss of his only child, a daughter, whose promising virtues and disposition he had contemplated with acute parental affection; and it is by some regarded as a proof of a strong mind, that he was thus enabled to divert his sorrows by Prefixed to the edition of Roderick Random, printed by Proprietors of then Classic.
